THROUGH COLLABORATION WITH CONCRETE ARTISAN ANDY FLEISHMAN
PORTLAND, Ore.

(May 10 2005)

Ann Sacks, in collaboration with leading concrete artisan, Andy Fleishman, presented four completely unique floor and wall tiles at the 2005 Kitchen/Bath Industry Show in Las Vegas.

Fleishman’s designs for Ann Sacks offer a visually striking alternative to complement the diverse Ann Sacks tile and stone collections. Fleishman, who started his career as a wood sculptor and cabinet maker in the 1970s, gravitated toward concrete as his primary medium. His designs for Ann Sacks include Diamond and Petal, two large-scale, geometric designs; and, Maximus and Tendril, two more intricate designs using floral themes. (more…)

With all of the focus on natural products and “green” floors, it’s no surprise that a company called Inhabitat is offering floors made from peach pits/pips. Talk about recycling!

According to Inhabitat, the floor consists of peach pips that are packed by hand onto a glued surface and filled with a silica sand and resin mixture, then sealed. The sharp edges of the pips are sanded off to expose the red hue of the pips and give the floor a natural wood feeling - making it warm, therapeutic and comfortable to walk on with bare feet. The floors are uniquely South African, natural and the design and color can be customized.

The house in Paarl is currently run as an art gallery (The Orange Mill) by Allah le Roux with his partner. After numerous requests and compliments regarding the floor, he decided to take it a step further and enter production of peach pip tiles as a business concept in the First National Bank Enablis Business Plan Competition, in which he was a finalist. In February 2007 the tile design and concept was registered. Today the endeavor is in progress as Stone Fruit Floors, creating job opportunities in the production of flooring rooted in sustainable materials and a traditional aesthetic.

2008 Color Trends February 28, 2008

photostogounlimited-1072224.jpgColor Trends - Color trends in fashion and home styles often cross paths. The thing to remember is that trends are always changing, changing with the seasons. Don’t feel pressure to change your home’s color palette every time fashion trends change! The natutral time to change your home colors will happen when you are ready. These changes over time will help create your own personal style. Over time you will have an eclectic look that you can be proud to call your own.

The ultimate source for color forecasting in fashion is Pantone. Click here for Pantone Fashion Color Report Fall 2008 and Pantone Fashion Color Report Spring 2008. My favorite color from the spring report is Cantaloupe!

Hot Colors

  • Purple - in fashion and home, purple is the front runner of color. photostogounlimited-1147976.jpg
  • Yellow - Yellow is the new orange! Orange will still remain with a presence, but not quite as hot as yellow.
  • Blues - varying shades from soft spa blues to robin’s egg blues to deep sea blues. Many nature inspired blues.
  • Greens - with all of the buzz about the environment, natural greens are making their way into the home
  • Browns -look great with other hot colors, especially the softer colors where black would be too harsh. (more…)

Trends in Flooring - Carpet and Area Rugs February 8, 2008

TRENDS IN CARPET AND AREA RUGS

With hardwood and tile being selected in more living areas and hallways, this is allowing dsc02592.jpgbedrooms and rooms off the hallway to have their own identities and themes. Carpet in the hallway can dictate that the surrounding rooms be the same material because when the doors are all open it doesn’t look so great for the hallway carpet to be seamed to several different colors or pattens of carpet. Hardwood or tile serves as a neutral divider. Because of this, rooms can have patterned carpets that compliment the theme of the room, bedding or drapery or wallpaper.

Natural fiber carpets and rugs have enough texture on their own, but the addition of raised patterns on top of that texture made me want to break out my checkbook and order some!

dsc02654.jpgCarpet companies like Glen Eden are taking advantage of the metallic finishes that are so popular by incorporating them into their patterned carpets. (left)

Because of the continued use and success of hard surfaces in main living areas as well as bedrooms, area rugs are in high demand. Like other colorful accents, rugs are being shown with lots of color, bright and bold colors as well as great patterns that can let the rugs be a focal point of the room.

Trends in residential products include warm neutrals, large and small patterns and soft luxurious yarns. With rooms having their own themes and identities, it’s easier to use multiple patterns and colors. Patterned carpets are becoming focal points and foundations for rooms that are dictating other design choices in the room. (these pictures are courtesy of Flooring the Consumer author C.B. Trends in Flooring - Tile February 7, 2008

TRENDS IN TILE

dsc02640.jpg

This may be the most exciting trend, to me! No longer is the most popular beige or a variation of beige but a celebration of color, range and texture! It’s about time!! By the way, the more color, texture and range a tile has - the more it hides DIRT. Large format tiles are

still on the forefront, but larger tiles and more shapes are coming into play. These multiple sizes allow for more unique patterns. There was one tile that was 24″ x 48″! It was so huge that it was also being used for vanity tops in addition to flooring.

This raised the question to me if home owners are less concerned with resale, taking more risks with color and falling in love with the outcome!

One exciting texture is fabric. Several companies were showing tiles with linen textures, leather textures and patterns. The look is very soft, without being boring. The listellos offered with these tiles were particularly exciting if you only want subtle pattern with a little “pop”. The floor of the Crossvile Ceramics exhibit booth showed a combination of the large floral pattern with the texture of linen. It was very feminine and calming. Another popular texture was a quartz and slate look. These tiles are very versatile and look great on the inside, outside as well as on the walls.

dsc02625.jpg dsc02759.jpgdsc02631.jpgdsc02644.jpg
Listellos and accent tiledsc02611.jpgs seemed to be more modern and contemporary. It was refreshing to see so many different style patterns and color combinations. I wasn’t sure if Subway shapes tiles would still be popular…Thank goodness they were. Not only were they still popular, but new sizes that are more linear were exciting! The Subway tiles are so flexible because they can be used in simple traditional settings and also extremely modern settings.dsc02642.jpg

Glass tiles were still on every corner, just this year there were more styles, finishes and textures. Glass tile patterns incorporated with metal, pearl finishes and patterns within the glass give you the opportunity for endless design options.

Trends in Flooring - Hardwood and Laminate February 6, 2008

TRENDS IN HARDWOOD AND LAMINATE

Just like more color seen in tile, wonderful ranges of color were shown in hardwood. Lauzon’s new products were the most appetizing colors. Coffee and chocolate colored stains with a pearl or low luster finish were so refreshing from the sea of golden colored hardwoods.

dsc02735.jpg

In the new product pavilion, Harris Wood showed painted hardwoods with the edges randomly sanded to look like old worn painted boards. The beauty of it is, with this product you get the look of painted boards, but with the strength of aluminum oxide on the finish.

dsc02566.jpg

Similar to the painted woods are the Olde Paint line from Anderson. They did a great job of making the boards look authentically old and worn. It reminded me of cottages and old historic homes in South Carolina.

Rustic and handscraped hardwoods are even on the texture bandwagon. One company showed a product with the look of texutre, wire brushing, reclaimed and handscraped properties all in one irresistible product. Creatively, they used the flooring boards to create a door. It got so much attention they wised they were in the door business as well!

Trends in Flooring - Color February 5, 2008

dsc02761.jpgSurfaces, the trade show that exhibits the most flooring you will find under one roof, has come to and end. This year’s show was spectacular! Manufacturers were there from all over the globe to show off new patterns, new technology and new product styles. It was very interesting to see the common trends between hardwood manufacturers, tile manufacturers and carpet manufacturers. Despite the condition of the housing market, everyone put their best foot forward with gorgeous new products and displays.

TRENDS IN COLOR

Color, Color, Color is the current trend! Bright colors, bold colors, rich colors and mixtures of colors in accent pillows, accessories and area rugs allow home owners to experiment with color without taking the risk of being permanently attached to it. Most everyone showed bursts of patterns: big floral patterns, geometric patterns and accents of color are HOT! In hard surfaces goods, texture, pattern and range create the perfect canvas for these accents of color. Metallics and pealescent finishes are also hot. All of the color made for a very unique and interesting show. The tie between runway fashion and home products has never been closer.

Green Build Expo 2007 - Shaw Gets A Green Thumbs Up! November 20, 2007

With over 22,800 in attendance and more than 850 exhibitors at this year’s Green Build Expo in Chicago it was clear that this green movement is here to stay and getting some serious attention.

dsc01721.jpgIt was no surprise that the expo was held downtown at McCormick Place, a building that is LEED certified. As you walked into the building there were a series of signs mounted to the wall explaining what it meant for the building to be a LEED certified building. Throughout the expo there were educational stations, recycling stations and many other efforts to educate on ways to become more “green” as well as ways to participate. It was also encouraging that throughout the city there were advertisements for new lofts and condos bragging that these new residences were “green” residences.

The expo kicked off differently than most trade shows. It began in the evening with a cocktail reception. Guests arriving the first day were allowed to spend a few hours getting a sneak peak of the show before the masses showed up to stand in the registration line the next day. Some people waited over 2 hours just to get into the show! I was fortunate enough to arrive the first day. It was helpful to be able to get an overview of the exhibit with less people before the aisles became crowded. It was exciting that some booths were so crowded that I had to come back a few hours later to try to get information! (more…)

Carpet Recycling Efforts and How You Can Do YOUR Part November 16, 2007

Filed under: Carpet, Floor Covering, Green, Green Flooring, Industry Changes — shannonbilby @ 10:55 am

recycle-symbol.jpg

Each year, carpet accounts for 2% of U.S. landfill waste by volume and close to 1% by weight. That translates to 5 billion pounds of waste per year making it one of the largest single contributors to landfills!

What’s being done about it?

One group called CARE or Carpet America Recovery Effort is a non profit organization formed in 2002 by The Carpet and Rug Institute. Members of the carpet industry, government agencies and some non-government agencies are aiming to increase the amount of recycling and reuse of post consumer carpet and reduce the amount of carpet waste going into landfills. Since CARE was formed, 500 million pounds of carpet have been recovered. (more…)

Dare to be different - trends in exotic hardwood flooring November 9, 2007

livingroom_wood_350.jpgExotic hardwood flooring is becoming increasingly more popular because buyers seem to constantly be searching for products for their homes that are more unique than what you find at your everyday big box store. These floors are a symbol of style and provide greater diversity from hardwood’s reputation as a traditional flooring choice.

The word exotic is defined as:

ex·ot·ic (g-ztk)

adj.

1. From another part of the world; foreign:

2. Intriguingly unusual or different; excitingly strange:

About Exotic Hardwood

Like traditional hardwood floors, exotic hardwood floors have styles offering different widths, species, grain, colors and types of construction. You can find exotic hardwoods that are unfinished, pre-finished, solid or engineered. Most of the floors come from South America, Australia, The Far East and Africa. Click here to see a selection of domestic versus exotic samples from the National Hardwood Association. It is also important to keep in mind that not all species of exotic hardwood are available as flooring. The ones listed here are all available for flooring. (more…)
